The Coat of Arms of the DYNASTIC HOUSE OF THE RIO DE LA PLATA is quarterly: 1st per pale Or and Gules, to the dexter a column Gules and to the sinister a mount Or supporting a tree Or with trunk of the same and in sinister chief a sun in his splendour Or; 2nd per pale Azure and Or, to the dexter a tower Argent masoned Sable with 5 battlements and 2 closed windows, in chief a crescent moon Argent and 3 five-pointed stars of the same, in base a lion couchant Or, and to the sinister a column Gules; 3rd per pale Gules and Vert, to the dexter a lion rampant Or supporting a tree Or with trunk of the same and in chief 3 fleur-de-lis Or, to the sinister a triple-towered medieval castle Or with open windows and battlements, in chief an inescutcheon, Gules a cross Or between 6 bezants in pale 3 and 3, and over the quarter, above a scroll Or, the Motto: MEMENTO AUDERE SEMPER; 4th Or, two counter-rampant panthers Sable and in chief an inescutcheon, barry Argent and Purpure, and on a chief Purpure a duck Argent and 3 trees Or with trunk of the same. The Escutcheon is crowned by the Coronet of a Marquess and supported by 6 flags, 3 on each side, Gules, Or and Gules, 2 banners Azure, 1 on each side, 2 rods above the banners, 1 on each side, 6 cannons Or in base, 3 on each side, and below 15 cannon balls Or stacked 5,4,3,2,1 in a pyramid shape together with 10 treasure sacks Or, 5 on each side.
The original Coat of Arms dates from immemorial time and was recognized as ancient Coat of Arms of the House of Bravo de Sobremonte, nobles “hijodalgos solariegos” since 1400. Therefore, King Carlos the Third of Spain, by Letters Patent dated 9th March 1761, granted unto sir José Antonio Bravo de Sobremonte y Castillo, Knight of the Order of Santiago, Judge of the Royal Audience of Seville, and Governor of Cartagena de Indias, the Hereditary Title and Dignity of Marquis. The arms were updated by the Third Marquis, sir Rafael de Sobremonte y Nuñez, Knight of the Royal and Military Order of Saint Hermenegild, and Viceroy of the Rio de la Plata, to include motifs representing the most recent history of the Family, and were updated again by the Chief of the Dynastic House of the Río de la Plata on 9th June, 1989.
